Air Fryer Banana with Cinnamon Sugar

Air fryer banana is such a yummy treat. It’s coated in spices and a little sugar and caramelized in the air fryer.

If you’re looking for a way to use bananas that aren’t your classic banana bread recipes, then here is the post for you. These delicious air fryer bananas are one of the easiest air fryer recipes out there!

It’s simply bananas tossed in a little brown sugar, oil, or melted butter, and spices and fried until golden. There is next to no prep time!

Serve it on french toast, or pancakes, or as a dessert with a dollop of cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

What bananas to use

This recipe does best with ripe bananas but not overripe bananas. Overripe bananas are the most naturally sweet, but they are also too soft and mushy for this recipe.

The air fryer makes the bananas quite soft already when frying. If they are overripe they won’t hold their shape at all. in which case you might want to leave out the sugar in the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Bananas – Ripe but still slightly firm bananas work best. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you can fry 2-3 bananas at a time.
  • Brown sugar – This is optional, however, a little additional sweetness helps to caramelize the bananas better. The brown sugar can be substituted with granulated sugar, honey, coconut sugar, or maple syrup. Feel free to leave it out though, the bananas have plenty of natural sweetness.
  • Melted butter or a mild vegetable oil – Melted coconut oil works well or light olive oil.
  • Ground cinnamon and a little ground nutmeg – The perfect spice additions to sweet bananas. You can also use pumpkin pie spice which will bring in a hint of cloves and ginger.
  • Vanilla extract or vanilla paste – It just lifts the flavor
  • Salt

Equipment

Air fryer – The air fryer bananas are made in a 5.8-quart air fryer.

Method

You can line the basket of the air fryer with aluminum foil but do this once you are ready, add the banana so that the foil does blow around in the air fryer.

Peel the bananas. On a cutting board, slice the bananas into long 1/4 inch slices. Add the slices to a small bowl. Drizzle over the melted butter or oil, add the spices and brown sugar, and toss them together to coat. Take care not to break up the banana pieces, especially if they are very ripe.

Alternatively, slice the whole banana lengthwise into two pieces. Mix the butter, spices, and sugar separately, and use a pastry brush to brush the bottom and the top of the bananas.

Lay the banana slices in a single layer inside the air fryer basket.

Cook at 375°F/190°C for around 6 minutes. Remove the basket and carefully flip the banana pieces over. They will be very soft so don’t be alarmed if they squash a bit.

Fry again for another 4 minutes or until golden brown and caramelized to your liking.

Storing

Leftover fried bananas can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The bananas can be rewarmed in the air fryer for 2-3 minutes before serving.
